In 2022, there were a number of legal threats to homeschooling. Threats can come in many different forms: new bills limiting our freedoms, government officials overreaching, sneaky grants that need just a little extra information, and last but not least: CPS knocking on your front door.
Ohio’s senate reintroduced and passed a bill that was shot down in 2018 due to public outcry, creating an unelected agency that will be responsible for enforcing existing regulations and adopting new regulations and for taking over all duties of the elected State Board of Education. (Editor’s Note: House Bill 151 recently failed to pass the Ohio House by four votes)
In Maine, the officials love to ask homeschooling parents for more information than they are allowed to ask, such as birth dates and custody agreements in case of divorced parents. In fact, Maine’s department of Education sent out a letter asking for the children’s birthdate and school year, stating that it is “now officially part of the home instruction requirements”. Such nonsense! The laws governing home education in Maine had not changed one bit, this was merely the result of a bureaucrat overstepping their bounds.
Many states have offered benefits and grants to homeschoolers, in exchange for some information, ostensibly so they know the grant is being spent well. Arizona and several other states have recently approved extra funding for private schools and home educating parents. The caveat is that a little bit of data is needed on the tax return, and you are required to keep receipts of expenses you wish to be reimbursed for. Are you really comfortable getting reimbursed for the book March of the Titans, written by Arthur Kemp? If you want to leave that book out, will your social studies curriculum be multi-cultural enough to be reimbursed, or will all books combined get you flagged on a list?
Families in Kentucky have received unpleasant home calls from two local school officials who were asking prying questions about the curriculum being taught to the children. The officials requested access into the home. These officials had absolutely no laws backing up their questions, but it all hinges on the person who answers (or does not answer!) the door.
We knew this would happen: the significant rise in homeschooling families has cut into school’s funding, with public schools receiving an average of $15,000 less per student removed from the system. The number of homeschooled students nearly doubled in numbers in recent years, and schools felt that hit in their pocket. The state governments see this, and with the federal government calling for Critical Race Theory (CRT) to be taught to students, home educators cannot simply be allowed to continue their peaceful existence.
When you notify the superintendent of your intent to homeschool your children, make sure you stay exactly within the letter of the law and do not offer any other information. When Child Protective Services (CPS) comes knocking on the door, do not answer and call the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). If there is a good grant from the government available for home instruction, do not take them up on this. There are always strings attached.
We have fought hard for our right to homeschool the children. These rights will not (yet) be taken from us by force, but they will be taken from us more subtly. Stay alert and be proactive. Without homeschooling our children, our children are left defenseless to the schools and the Gay Afro Zionist scum that run them.
