Gordon and Grug sit down with Myles Poland of The Godcast and Theo of Involution to have an off-the-cuff discussion about how crime and punishment are handled in America, and how they might be handled better.
Due to the graphic nature of prison and criminality, this episode has been marked Explicit, and cursing has not been edited. Listener discretion is advised.
Did Gordon say he wanted to be invited on Popcorn N’ Soda so he could talk about Gargoyles (the animated show from the ’90s)?!
100%, one of my favorite shows as a kid, and the only kids cartoon I can think of that references Shakespeare as much as it does.
One of my favorites too, although knowing what we know now it’s hard to ignore how subversive and crypto it is: a small population who suffer a near-genocide and then are forced into a diaspora?
Yeah there’s plenty of jewy themes. It also was one of the vanguards of 90s Burger King Kids Club tier diversity, the main human female was like half black half Navajo or some crazy shit.
It didn’t click for me for the longest time that Elisa was a black/Navajo mix, even after watching late night reruns on Toon Disney for years. That’s the subtlety of the BKKC programming for you. She was fit enough to pass for a Med. And any episodes with her family were only memorable because of what Xanatos was up to. Except that one where they meet Elisa’s full-on black mother in Nigeria and the villain isn’t Xanatos but the spider from African folklore. That was agony. Because holy shit do I not care about non-white mother/daughter drama.
Gargoyles was on at 4 am when I was 7 and I would get up super early in the morning to watch Power Rangers.
If you’re comfortable saying, when was Gargoyles ever on at 4AM for you? What years? What channel? Was this on cable? Was it in the US? Genuinely curious. It definitely wasn’t on at 4AM when it initially aired. I think in my case seasons 1-2 premiered in the after-school block, and then the Goliath Chronicles (which mostly sucked) ran Saturday mornings before the show was cancelled.
I would have been 7 (Grade 2) so like 2005/2006. This was Direct TV satellite near Detroit (just across the border in Canada)
Sounds like the Toon Disney channel in the mid to late ’00s. I missed most of Gargoyles on its initial airing, but caught the reruns on Toon Disney (also on Direct TV) when that channel first started in 1998 and aired back-to-back episodes as part of its late night block. They even had a Gargoyles marathon on New Year’s Eve in 1999. (As it turned out, the world didn’t end at midnight: the marathon just went on.) In the ’00s they changed their lineup with the Jetix block which, I think, incorporated Power Rangers. Then they turned Toon Disney into Disney XD, but by that point I wasn’t watching much TV.
It should go without saying that rape should never be used as a punishment (it should never be done at all, ever). That being said, I understand the reaction towards those guilty of heinous crimes, for which life imprisonment is not adequate justice.
Never forget when shitlibs were gleefully hoping for Kyle Rittenhouse, a minor, to be brutally sexually assaulted in prison, for killing a serial child rapist, who was rioting on behalf of a violent sex offender.
What is the title/artist of the closing song?
