While we do not yet have all the facts regarding the recent mass shooting in Maine as of writing this piece Thursday morning October 26th, what we can share are some basic tips that everyone should keep in mind when out in public as our society becomes ever more volatile and unpredictable.
Situational Awareness:
Some of these tips may be common sense, or something you are already familiar with, but it bears repeating and making it a part of your daily life:
- Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Avoid distractions like your phone especially in unfamiliar or potentially high risk situations.
- Scan your Environment: Continuously scan the area around you, including people, vehicles, and exits and be aware of what’s happening in your immediate vicinity.
- Trust your Gut: If something feels off or suspicious, don’t dismiss it. Trust your instincts and take appropriate action.
- Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a reasonable distance from strangers, especially in crowded places or when walking alone at night, which will provide you with more time to react if a situation escalates.
- Plan Ahead: Before entering an unfamiliar location, research the area, and have a general idea of the layout, emergency exits, and nearby services (this applies even in familiar locations as well)
- Avoid Tunnel Vision: Don’t focus solely on one thing, as it may cause you to miss other important details; maintain a broad awareness of your surroundings. This ties back to the first two points.
- Listen Actively: Sound can provide valuable information. Pay attention to conversations, footsteps, and other noises that might reveal potential threats or changes in the environment.
- Stay Informed: Keep up with local news and events to be aware of any potential issues or disruptions in your area. This applies more to potential natural disasters rather than doom scrolling.
- Make situational awareness a habit: Regularly challenge yourself to observe and remember details about your environment to improve your skills. Practice makes perfect, and you can even make a game of it with your friends and family, quizzing them about what they recall.
- Develop a Plan: In case of emergencies, have a basic plan in mind. Know where the nearest exits are, and consider what you would do if a dangerous situation were to occur. This also applies to your own home; never assume that your home is free from any dangers.
Tribe and Train:
As many our guy groups and even several of us in this network have emphasized time and again, it is absolutely vital that you find a tribe of your own, work together, build that community, train and drill for various situations, and be prepared for the worst case scenarios.
This applies not only to situations of social upheaval and civil violence, but also natural and man-made disasters as well. We all should realize by now that we are considered enemies of the State, no one is going to save us in our time of need. If a train full of toxic chemicals derails in our neighborhoods, we can expect to receive absolutely nothing from this government or the perpetrators of that disaster. If a fire ravages our town, destroys our homes and businesses, and kills our people, this government won’t spend even a percentage of what they regularly send to Ukraine or Israel to help us rebuild.
No politician is going to lift a finger to help White America, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you can work with others in your area to build a network that can survive the onslaught from the outside world.
You know your own area best, and the people you connect with as well. What works for one part of the country may not work for yours and vice versa. You may have different needs due to different demographics in your area: for example more families means more children and thus a need for more essentials for babies and other young children. Another area with mostly single guys would have a different focus and opportunities for their needs.
Regardless of the makeup of your tribe and community, train and drill in ways that will develop those skills necessary to ensure your survival and the survival of those you love and care about around you. This might entail learning martial arts or going on long ruck hikes, heading to the range to work on marksmanship or practicing urban warfare tactics via paintball arenas, gathering emergency supplies such as food, water, and clothing to tide the local community over in case of disaster. As I mentioned before, you can even make a game of practicing situational awareness and quiz one another on what you saw and experienced when out in public.
