In our sphere, there are certainly a lot that has been said about how sick and twisted Hollywood is. Thanks to the furor over Harvey Weinstein’s abuses and other high-profile cases, even the general public has become more and more aware of how sick and deranged the little subculture in Southern California really is. McCurdy doesn’t shy away from some of the more sinister parts of the entertainment industry, but she reserves the most of her ink for the stories of the abuse that she suffered at the hands of her own mother.
It is a self-reinforcing aspect of the fall of empires that the very idea of “collapse” becomes more fascinating to the public and their rulers. Right now, there are a lot of books about “collapse”, political and historical, predictive and descriptive, but Vladislav M. Zubok’s work “Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union” is still well worth the read.
We need to show up to take our families to our local community events, show up at the school board meetings, the Lions club pancake breakfasts, and the volenteer fire department fish fry. Join and bring your children to a local church, even if it isn’t a perfect one. If you have a business, go to the chamber of commerce meetings, even if most of your peers are TV-brained boomers. Be a part of your local community, find friends that live close to you, even if their ideology isn’t there yet, or never will be.
