Gordon has a conversation with friend of the show, Hans, about the basics of starting up a homestead – from growing herbs in the window of your one bedroom apartment to raising chickens and ducks on an acreage, they attempt to give a broad overview of the best ways to start off on the right track, and how to avoid common pitfalls.
Hans recommends the book “The Contrary Farmer” by Gene Logsdon.

Another way to get cheap feed for your animals is to call your local food banks. They get tons of food that is already almost too old to give away and they end up hauling lots of it out to the dumpster. They are usually very happy if you show up once or twice a week and take it from them instead. Some of them will fill up the bed of your truck with produce and bread that is a little too old to give away, but pigs and chickens will love it.
