Gordon gives his thoughts on his travels through the upper Midwest, specifically his time spent in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He takes a gander at several important sites – comparing the “modern art” that is the George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis to the statue of Herman The German in New Ulm, and then his time in Wisconsin, spending a weekend with the boisterous Midwest Network crew in that state before ending on a more somber note about the site of the Waukesha Parade Attack, two years on.

it needs a special guy to be(come) a leader – a lively spirit, adaptability, loyalty to the cause – survival, resurrection… The legend goes that ‘Arminius’ was the name given to him by the Romans – They used to take the sons of Germanic tribal leaders hostage to force the tribes into submission. Herman the Cherusker was taken to Rome, raised and educated as if he was the son of a Roman nobleman, and trained in Roman warfare. But he never forgot who he was, he stayed loyal to his folk, returned home, united the Germanic tribes under his leadership, and the legions of Varus were successfully beaten in the Teutoburg Forest.
It really is an inspiring story. The statue was great to see.
Freya when are you coming on the show??? 🙂
Thank you very much for inviting me; it would be fun talking to you two, joining your next baking session… I really hope you will try the “Spitzbuben” (cookies) for Christmas – Not too sweet, less sugar is better…
I am just a “little girl” – TOO AFRAID of you, am I?
(I mean not of you two – but of the rougher ones who do not want to read or think too much – They can get extremely unpleasant – especially towards “a little girl hitting hard” – I have three brothers, you know – I have learnt how to defend myself – I understand self defense but hate it being done the stupid “feminist” way – Pretentous “feminist” females are JUST AS STUPID & AGGRESSIVE as men who do not want to learn – and cannot take “hard hitting” statements coming from a female)… …
Wall Drugs was a major disappointment though.
It really is terrible, I’m sorry you experienced that. That part of SD is beautiful but I do hate how chintzy and fake all the tourist stuff looks.
My god. That George Floyd memorial is just disgusting. I mean, he was never going to make a great statue, but at least show some pictures of the fiiiiiiiiiiiiine honies he had, instead of he himself. That’s the kind of tribute the (sub-)man would wanted.
The Romans conquered all of GALLIA (what later became France), some parts of GERMANIA (what later became Germany) – mostly the Rhineland and were halted on the Danube river, where they built a wall (‘The Limes’) and lots of military bases, of course – All of ANGLIA TERRA (England) was conquered, until the Romans were stopped by the Scots; up there in the north they built another wall (‘Hadrian’s Wall’), and military bases – The US empire does the same since WWII, all around the world, also overstretching and the downfall goes even quicker than with the Romans… the same subversive forces are at work, and the same Fear of the Jews…
Temporarily Occupied (Conquered) countries and people are always culturally influenced by the conquerors – There are lots of ENGLISH words derived and related to LATIN words; to ancient Latin, the language spoken by the Romans – Some examples taken from the short paragraph above…
English speakers talk somehow in Latin without even realizing it – Language is a fascinating medium…
engl. Mid (Middle) – lat. medium; engl. specifically – lat.specialiter (adv), species (n); engl. sites – lat. situs;
engl. compare – lat. comparare (v.); engl. art – lat. ars (N, f, Sg)/artis (G,f,Sg); engl. memorial – lat. memoriae (n) – memorare (v); engl. statue – lat. statua (n); engl.new – lat. novus (m), nova (f), novum (n); engl note – lat. nota (n); engl subscribers – engl below – write – lat.sub – scribe; engl. access – lat. accedere (v); engl exclusive – lat. excludere (v); engl content – lat. contentus (n); engl visit – lat. visitare (v) – visita (n); engl exodus – lat.exodus (n); engl host – lat.hostis (n, N, Sg), hostes (n, N, Pl); engl donate – lat.donare (v.)
adv (adverb); n (noun); v (verb); N (Nominative); m (masculin); f (feminin); n (neutral); G (Genitive); Sg (Singular); Pl (Plural)
ENGLISH is like a shorthand version of GERMAN; English is a Germanic language. LATIN is quite similar to German. Not the words but the intricacy of the structure. Latin has six cases; German has five – in Latin and in German there are three genders (m, f, n) for the nouns, with different endings in Latin, different articles in German. The language is programming the brains, the way of thinking, the imagination, the creativity.
YIDDISH on the other hand is a mutilation, a massacre of the German language! Mixed up with some Asiatic, Turk, Khasarian (?) lingo – a very weird mixture. I am wondering… By using Hebrew letters the identity thieves call that Yiddish jibberish “New Hebrew” now? Ancient Hebrew is no longer a living language, the same as Latin. The ancient Hebrews are gone, as well as the Romans…
I hope this kind of comment is not too boring for you; I find such findings fascinating. Just saying…
I ain’t reading all that
There are books on the history of English. English used to be like Dutch (well, Old English was like Old Dutch), but it got simplified because the Norse invaded, and the English and they could understand each other as long as they did away with complexities. Kind of nice, actually – I’m happy to not have to have learned that the sky is male, a chair female, etc, for every object out there.
No problem… There are much more difficult things to learn (get used to) than that – Interesting that there is a third gender in LATIN as well as in GERMAN: (gender) neutral (n)!
engl the child / a child – dt das Kind / ein Kind (n); engl the girl / a girl – dt das Mädchen / ein Mädchen (n) – meaning: hands off of little girls – Language as a means for accuracy in expression & meaning – GREEK, LATIN, GERMAN were the languages used in science for a long time – ENGLISH is dominant since the German Reich has been destroyed (in two forced upon world wars)
engl the chair / a chair; the stool / a stool – dt der Stuhl / ein Stuhl (m); engl the sky – dt der Himmel (m)
Gordon, What plugin heater do you use? Do you recommend?
Honestly I just got a cheap 400w one from Walmart. It worked pretty good, but it only just kinda kept the car from frosting over, not really “warm”. The bigger problem is finding outlets to be honest. I’ve only been able to successfully use it a couple times since I got it. Not sure I can recommend it,probably only really worthwhile if you have a portable power bank that can power it that you can also charge in your vehicle.
Thank you for going to these places we wish to honor. I enjoy your commentary
Thank you man, I appreciate it
